Northern Ireland PGwT Workshop:Innovative Teaching, Surviving Your Viva, Top Five Teaching Worries Solved; How to Write Your Thesis - Monday, 18 October 2010, Coleraine, Northern Ireland

This event is organised by psychology postgraduates for postgraduates who teach or tutor in Psychology (from any region). New postgraduates with upcoming teaching responsibilities and others with teaching or tutoring responsibilities in Psychology are welcome.

10:15-11:30Innovative Ways to Teach Psychology - Want to stop students falling asleep in class or prevent boredom? Join Dr Colin Cooper (presentation), Queen's University Belfast as he suggests ways to keep students engaged in the classroom by incorporating a variety of teaching techniques. Dr. Claire McDowell (presentation), University of Ulster, will end the session by presenting on her use of behavioural approaches in the classroom such as the use of flash cards.

11:45-12:45Surviving your Viva - Are you having reoccurring nightmares about standing in front of a panel with your thesis in hand, waiting for the red x to appear from the examiners? Preparing for your viva can be a daunting task. Get tips and advice from Professor Ed Cairns, University of Ulster, who is both an experienced PhD supervisor and external examiner.

1:45-3:00Your Top Five Teaching Worries Solved - Worried about: making the transition from student to teacher? Preparing adequately? Keeping students interested? Marking and assessment? Getting and making the most out of your teaching experience? Professor Ronnie Wilson and Dr. Marian McLaughlin (presentation), University of Ulster will answer these worries by providing advice from their own experiences.

One of 24 discipline-based centres within the Higher Education Academy, the Psychology Network supported the teaching and learning of psychology across the UK between 2004 and 2011. A core team, based at the University of York, worked with students, staff, departments, professional bodies and overseas organisations to develop supportive networks and to improve the learning experience of psychology students in Higher Education.
